Types of German universities

When planning to study abroad in Germany, you will need to research the types of higher education institutions there. The universities in Germany are divided in public and private universities. Of course the private universities are more expensive than the public ones.

However you should check the accreditation of the private, as well as the public universities to make sure your education will be recognized once you are done with it. In the relative sector the universities are divided in normal universities and universities of applied sciences, which are closer to the market and not so much focused on science like universities. Most of the universities of applied sciences are pretty new unlike the others. If you know what discipline you want to study, then you will soon find out if you should go to a university of applied sciences or not.

Universities in Münster, Cologne, Tübingen etc. are mostly hundreds of years old and have a long tradition. These are names a lot of people in Germany know and have heard about. Due to this reputation you may want to see if it is possible to get a seat as a student there. There may be higher enrollment rates due to the reputation than at other universities.

As a general rule you can say that most of the universities are focused on special topics with an explicit knowledge. In the last years the education system changed through the Bologna process to implement the German system into the international Bachelor and Master system to make it easier for students around the world to do, for example, exchanges.

Also in terms of fees for tuition you will find a higher tuition in the western part of the country than in the east, since there is still an economic gap between those sides of the country since the wall came down. This could also affect the state the buildings are in and if there are any technological advances that would help students learn more than just from books.
