Differences in higher education
Higher education refers to education above that what you can get from high school. This is normally a higher level of education, which is offered by universities and colleges. This type of education results in an academic degree or a professional certification. Depending on where and in what country you plan to study there may be different definitions of the degrees and places where to study available.
If you are looking into studying in Germany, then you will want to review what types degrees and professional certifications are available to you. The Chamber of Commerce offers a selection of accredited certification programs which may be of interest. Normally it is harder to get a form of certification outside the Chamber of Commerce, which is respected by an employer in Germany. Also, you may want to see if any course credit from your university or college can transfer over, that is if you are a student at a college or university and wish to study in Germany. Since the 2003 Bologna Process, Germany, as well as the other EU member states have been trying to change the education system in a way that regardless what type of degree you have, you will be able to move around the EU and it will be recognized. Currently in Germany the majority of employers recognize the Masters or Diplom degree. Slowly the Bachelors degree is becoming available. It might take some time for employers to accept a Bachelors degree over a Masters/Diplom.
Higher education in Germany is referred to Hochschule, but splits into three types: university (Universität), university of applied science (Fachhochschule) and university of cooperative education (Berufsakademie). You will need to test your German language ability before applying. However, if you are not sure of the language requirement at a German institution of higher education, then double check with their admissions office.
